Conan O’Brien also made a pit stop at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York this morning, to help kick off the upfront presentation of Turner Entertainment’s TNT and TBS networks.
O’Brien, of course, will begin hosting a late night television show on TBS beginning Nov. 8, and flew in especially for the event; he told the audience that he was just touring in Minneapolis last night, and was off to Chicago in a couple hours for his next gig.
O’Brien’s set began with a video of the comedian laying on the floor, wildly bearded and overweight, and surrounded by empty pizza boxes and beer bottles. To the tune of “All By Myself,” he transitioned from bored task (eating Kentucky Fried Chicken out of the bucket by his pool) to other bored tasks (putting peanut butter on his foot for his dog to lick, making smoothies out of chips and Crisco), before leaping back into shape upon receiving TBS’s offer to host his own show via phone.
O’Brien immediately addressed his bizarre year, comparing it to a certain byzantine show ending this Sunday. “The plot to ‘Lost’ is more plausible than the last year of my life,” he said. “If anyone in this ROOM can explain exactly what happened four months ago, I’ll be in the lobby.”
He also riffed on his beard, among other things, before getting to the business at hand: to announce that he was thrilled to be at TBS, after meeting Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks, on the online dating site J-Date. He then thanked Koonin for giving him a “blank creative check…you fool.”
O’Brien also touted cable television, nothing that he did not want “to live in a country with less than six ESPN networks,” before concluding with a performance of “On the Road Again,” complete with the lyric: “I just want to be on my own show again.”
