“Jurassic Lounge is back by popular demand, with new rooms, new bands, new acts, new exhibitions and some very unusual surprises, a little like the second level of a rather unique video game,” said Matt Ravier, Jurassic Lounge artistic director. “Sydney's newest artists and Australia's first museum are all set to bring a little warmth and wonder to your winter weeknights.”
Drink in hand, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the building at their leisure, come face to face with Australian wildlife, learn about the important scientific research done by Australian Museum scientists and connect with collections and specimen items not normally available to the public.
In season 1, visitors had a chance to discover the Museum’s collection, as well as temporary exhibitions. Also included with the price of admission was a free drink from the pop-up bar and a different line-up of specially curated performances every week: a silent disco, live bands, VJs, stand-up comedy, slam poetry, live art, magicians, body painting, cabaret, light jugglers, contemporary dance, live tattooing, snake handling, poetry readings, expert talks, tarot readings, photo booths, drag performance, film projections, torchlight tours, specimen tables, face painting and interactive video installations.
Frank Howarth, director of The Australian Museum said “Jurassic Lounge has exceeded our expectations at the Museum, with over 12,000 people walking through the doors in the first 12 weeks. We aim to build on these successes by adding new experiences and continuing to showcase all that the Museum has to offer as part of a diverse and re-invigorated Sydney nightlife.”
The next season offers a chance to catch a new Museum exhibition on the work of young 19th century scientific pioneers Harriet & Helena Scott, attend night talks led by visiting experts and even take in a movie from the ‘Margaret Mead Film & Video Festival’, which showcases documentaries that increase our understanding of the complexity and diversity of our planet’s peoples and cultures.
